Trump Dismisses Attorney General Pam Bondi Amid Epstein Files Controversy
US President Donald Trump has removed Attorney General Pam Bondi from office, ending a turbulent 14-month tenure marked by political controversy and mounting criticism over the handling of the Jeffrey Epstein case files.
The abrupt decision, announced via social media on April 2, follows weeks of backlash against the Justice Department over delays, errors and inconsistencies in the release of documents linked to Epstein. While Trump praised Bondi personally and said she would transition to the private sector, the move triggered immediate speculation in Washington about deeper internal tensions.
Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who previously served as Trump’s legal counsel, has been appointed acting attorney general.
Much of the criticism surrounding Bondi focused on her management of the Epstein-related disclosures. Earlier, she had suggested that a so-called “client list” tied to Epstein was under review, a claim later contradicted by the Justice Department, which said no such document existed. The eventual release of millions of records—mandated in part by congressional pressure—was marred by delays, incomplete materials and errors, including improper redactions and the accidental exposure of victims’ identities.
The issue intensified during a contentious congressional hearing in early 2026, where Bondi declined to apologise to Epstein’s survivors and provided limited clarification, drawing bipartisan criticism.
At the same time, Bondi oversaw a series of investigations targeting figures seen as political opponents of the president, including former FBI director James Comey, New York Attorney General Letitia James, and lawmakers such as Adam Schiff and Eric Swalwell. Several of these cases faltered in court, with some dismissed over procedural issues and others failing to secure sufficient evidence.
Critics argued that under Bondi’s leadership, the Justice Department’s independence was undermined. They pointed to the removal of experienced prosecutors and FBI personnel and their replacement with political loyalists—moves that reportedly weakened key units handling public corruption and national security cases, while also affecting staff morale.
Despite her efforts to advance the administration’s agenda, Trump was said to be increasingly dissatisfied with the outcomes of key legal battles, particularly the failure to secure convictions against high-profile targets.
In a statement following her dismissal, Bondi described her time leading the Justice Department as “the honour of a lifetime” and highlighted what she called progress in improving public safety. She is expected to assist with the transition before moving into a private-sector role.
Her departure makes her the second senior cabinet official to be removed in recent weeks, underscoring ongoing instability within the administration as it navigates legal and political challenges.
