Australian PM Proposes Social Media Ban for Children Under 16
Australia’s Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has unveiled plans to ban children from accessing social media platforms. The announcement came on Tuesday as the government prepares to introduce legislation aimed at enforcing a minimum age requirement for digital platform use in 2024.
“We know social media is causing social harm, pulling kids away from real friendships and genuine experiences,” Albanese said in a statement. He added that the legislation will be developed in consultation with states and territories, with his preferred minimum age set at 16.
A poll conducted by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation in August revealed that 61 percent of Australians support restricting social media access for those under 17 years of age.
In addition, Peter Malinauskas, the premier of South Australia, has commissioned a former federal judge, Robert French, to investigate legal measures to prevent children younger than 14 from using social media. Albanese stated that the federal government would take French’s findings into account when drafting the new laws.
