The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has signaled that he may soon make a definitive statement regarding growing calls for him to contest the 2027 governorship election in Abia State.
Kalu gave the indication on Tuesday during a high-level meeting with prominent political figures and community elders drawn from across his Bende Federal Constituency, where pressure continues to mount on him to join the race.
Currently serving his second term in the National Assembly, the Deputy Speaker described the wave of endorsements from his constituents as “organic,” while urging patience as he consults widely before making his next political move.
The gathering took on a symbolic tone as community elders presented Kalu with a machete and a traditional girdle—cultural emblems signifying readiness and collective backing.
Reflecting on the gesture, Kalu said:
“You have always done this symbolic preparation and given me the blessings of our elders and the spirit of our land.
“And every time I have gone with your blessing, I have always won.
“I am not afraid. I am prepared to listen to what you have said. I will come back with a decision soon.”
He further assured supporters that any formal declaration regarding his political future would be made in Umuahia, in accordance with constitutional provisions.
At the meeting, several stakeholders openly endorsed Kalu’s potential candidacy, citing his legislative track record and leadership credentials as key strengths.
Among them, Abia’s representative in the Public Complaints Commission, Dr. Madukwe Ukaegbu, praised his performance, stating:
“Bende people are gathered here today because we are proud of you, because you have shown capacity in your representation and we know that you will do better as governor.”
Prof. Hagler Okorie also echoed similar sentiments, highlighting Kalu’s perceived suitability for higher office.
The event further underscored the depth of grassroots support for the Deputy Speaker, as various groups from across the constituency displayed placards urging him to enter the governorship race.
With anticipation building, political observers say Kalu’s forthcoming decision could significantly shape the dynamics of the 2027 governorship contest in Abia State.
