ASUU Declares Indefinite Strike at UNIJOS Over Unpaid Salaries
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) chapter at the University of Jos (UNIJOS) has declared an indefinite strike, citing delays in salary payments and unpaid allowances.
The decision, announced on Wednesday, directs all lecturers to immediately withdraw from lectures, examinations, and official meetings.
Union leaders said the action followed approvals from both the National Executive Council and the local congress after efforts to resolve the issue failed.
According to ASUU, members are yet to receive their March 2026 salaries, along with the Earned Academic Allowance, despite waiting for an extended period.
In a statement, the union said it had exercised patience but could no longer continue academic activities under the circumstances.
ASUU noted that internal checks indicated the delay did not originate from the university’s bursary department, which had reportedly completed its obligations. Instead, the union linked the issue to the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation, which it believes is responsible for the delay in releasing funds.
The union also warned that continued delays could disrupt stability within the institution, adding that a monitoring team has been set up to ensure full compliance with the strike directive.
