Authorities in Japan on Monday lifted a tsunami warning issued after a powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck the country’s northern and northeastern regions, triggering waves along the Pacific coast and disrupting transport services.

The quake, recorded at about 07:52 GMT, had its epicentre roughly 71 miles off Miyako in Iwate Prefecture, according to the United States Geological Survey. Japanese authorities, however, placed the magnitude at 7.7.

Following the tremor, the Japan Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami warning for coastal areas in Aomori Prefecture, Hokkaido, and Iwate, cautioning that waves could reach up to three metres (nearly 10 feet).

Residents in coastal and riverside communities were urged to evacuate immediately to higher ground. Tsunami waves were subsequently observed off parts of Iwate and Aomori along the Pacific Ocean, according to Kyodo News.

The warning was later downgraded to an advisory and eventually lifted, though authorities cautioned that more earthquakes of similar magnitude could occur within the week.

Japan’s government confirmed that no abnormalities were reported at nuclear facilities in Aomori and Miyagi Prefecture.

Transport services were affected, with bullet train operations suspended between Tokyo and Aomori following the quake.

Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi urged residents in affected areas to remain vigilant and continue seeking higher ground where necessary.

As of the time of filing this report, there were no immediate reports of casualties or significant damage.
