Donald Trump, King Charles III hail U.S.–U.K. ties at White House state dinner
Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump hosted King Charles III and Queen Camilla for a state dinner at the White House on Tuesday, with both sides emphasizing the strength and future of the U.S.–British alliance.
Speaking in the East Room, Trump called the visit “historic” as the United States approaches its 250th anniversary of independence, highlighting what he described as a deep and enduring bond rooted in shared history. He also praised the king’s earlier address to Congress, joking about the rare bipartisan reception it received.
In his remarks, Charles underscored the “unbreakable” ties between the two nations, spanning culture, commerce and security, and said both countries remain committed to facing global challenges together. He framed the partnership as a cornerstone of long-term prosperity for citizens on both sides of the Atlantic.
The evening included light humor, with Charles referencing ongoing renovations at the White House and quipping about Britain’s burning of the building during the War of 1812. He later presented Trump with a ceremonial bell from HMS Trump, describing it as a symbol of shared wartime history and cooperation.
More than 125 guests attended the dinner, including senior administration officials, U.S. Supreme Court justices and business leaders such as Jeff Bezos, Tim Cook and Robert Kraft.
According to the Office of the First Lady, the evening’s decor drew inspiration from gardens, featuring floral displays and green-themed table settings. The menu highlighted seasonal ingredients, ending with a beehive-shaped chocolate dessert.
The visit and dinner served as a high-profile reaffirmation of diplomatic and cultural ties between the United States and the United Kingdom.
