Multiple people were receiving medical treatment on Thursday after a suspected gas leak triggered panic at London’s busy Farringdon Station, prompting an emergency response and widespread travel disruption.

The incident unfolded during the morning rush hour when several passengers began to feel unwell, leading to the immediate evacuation of the station.

British Transport Police confirmed they were alerted to the situation at about 9:42 a.m. local time, with paramedics and firefighters quickly deployed to the scene.

“We are on scene at Farringdon station following reports of a suspected gas leak, with a small number of passengers reporting feeling unwell,” police said in a statement.

Emergency crews, including specialists from the London Fire Brigade, responded in force. Authorities said two fire engines, two fire rescue units, and specialist officers were mobilised to assess and contain the situation. Members of the public were urged to steer clear of the area as emergency operations continued.

The incident caused significant disruption to rail services. National Rail confirmed that Elizabeth line and Thameslink trains were temporarily unable to stop at Farringdon Station while emergency teams worked to secure the site.

Passengers across London faced delays and cancellations, with some trains diverted. Officials warned that disruption was expected to continue until at least 5 p.m. local time.

As investigations continue into the cause of the suspected leak, authorities are focusing on ensuring passenger safety and restoring normal service as quickly as possible.
