New Hijri Year: Tinubu Calls for Patriotism, Unity and Responsible Citizenship
As millions of Muslims in Nigeria and across the world ushered in the Islamic New Year, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on citizens to embrace the values of patriotism, sacrifice and responsible citizenship as the nation continues its journey toward peace and prosperity.
The President’s message, delivered to mark the beginning of the year 1448AH, centred on the enduring lessons of the Hijrah—the historic migration of Prophet Muhammad (SAW) from Mecca to Madina—which marks the start of the Islamic calendar and remains one of the most significant events in Islamic history.
In a statement issued by his spokesman, Mr Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu congratulated Muslims on the occasion and urged them to reflect on the timeless virtues embodied by the Hijrah: faith, resilience, patience, sacrifice and unwavering trust in Allah’s divine plan.
The President noted that these values remain relevant not only to personal spiritual growth but also to the collective task of nation-building.
According to him, the story of the Hijrah serves as a powerful reminder that progress often requires courage, perseverance and a willingness to embrace change in pursuit of a greater good.
At a time when Nigeria is confronting economic, social and developmental challenges, Tinubu said the lessons of renewal and determination associated with the Islamic New Year offer inspiration for citizens to contribute positively to national development.
He called on Nigerians, particularly members of the Muslim community, to renew their commitment to the principles of good citizenship through honesty, hard work, tolerance and service to others.
The President stressed that acts of kindness and dedication to duty remain essential ingredients for fostering national unity and strengthening social cohesion in a diverse society.
He further observed that responsible citizenship goes beyond individual aspirations and extends to collective efforts aimed at building stronger institutions, safer communities and a more prosperous future for all.
Tinubu’s message also highlighted the role of faith in promoting peace and understanding, urging citizens to uphold values that encourage harmony across religious and ethnic divides.
As the new Islamic year begins, the President expressed hope that the occasion would inspire Nigerians to look beyond differences and focus on the shared goal of national progress.
He offered prayers for divine guidance and blessings, asking Allah to grant peace, prosperity and protection to families across the country.
The President also prayed for continued wisdom and strength in Nigeria’s pursuit of sustainable development and lasting stability.
For many Muslims, the commencement of a new Hijri year is not merely a calendar event but a moment for reflection, renewal and recommitment to faith and moral values. Tinubu’s message echoed that spirit, linking personal transformation with the broader aspirations of national growth and unity.
As the crescent of Muharram ushers in another chapter in the Islamic calendar, the President’s call serves as a reminder that the principles of sacrifice, integrity and service—hallmarks of the Hijrah—remain critical to shaping the future of Nigeria.
With prayers for peace and a renewed commitment to nation-building, the country enters the new Islamic year looking toward a future anchored on hope, faith and shared responsibility.
