Enugu North By-Election: Aspirants Revolt Against NDC Primaries, Raise Alarm Over Candidate Imposition

As political activities intensify ahead of the June 20 Enugu North Senatorial District by-election, a fresh crisis has erupted within the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), with several aspirants rejecting the outcome of the party’s primary election and alleging a deliberate subversion of democratic processes.

The dispute has cast a shadow over the party’s preparations for the crucial poll, which is being held to fill the vacancy created by the death of Senator Okey Ezea in November 2025.

For many party faithful, the by-election was expected to provide an opportunity for the NDC to demonstrate its commitment to internal democracy and transparent leadership selection. Instead, it has become the centre of a growing controversy that threatens to deepen divisions within the party.

Leading the protest are Dr. Vincent Obetta and Mr. Okay Agbo, who, on behalf of other aggrieved aspirants, issued a strongly worded statement rejecting the outcome of the primaries reportedly conducted on May 26 and 29.

According to the aspirants, the process that produced Oscar Ossai as the party’s candidate lacked legitimacy and failed to comply with established electoral and party guidelines.

They argued that no valid direct primary election was conducted across the electoral wards in the senatorial district and that no lawful consensus arrangement was reached among stakeholders and contestants.

“Our position is clear,” the aspirants declared. “We reject the result of the purported primary election. No valid direct primary election was conducted in any electoral ward, and no lawful consensus process took place as required by law.”

The aggrieved politicians maintained that the exercise did not reflect the democratic ideals upon which the party was founded. Rather than a transparent contest, they alleged that the process amounted to the imposition of a preferred candidate while excluding aspirants, party members and critical stakeholders from participation.

They further claimed that the list of candidates emerged through the influence of powerful figures within the party hierarchy, sidelining aspirants who had undergone screening and invested considerable resources and effort in preparation for the primaries.

The controversy highlights a recurring challenge within Nigeria’s political landscape, where disputes over party primaries often become as contentious as the elections themselves. Analysts note that internal wrangling and allegations of candidate imposition have historically weakened party cohesion and affected electoral outcomes.

For the protesting aspirants, the issue goes beyond personal ambition. They insist that the credibility of the party and the confidence of its members are at stake.

“The NDC is founded on the principles of justice, fairness, participation and democracy,” they stated, urging the party’s national leadership to reject the outcome of the exercise and ensure that due process is followed.

As the countdown to the by-election continues, attention is now focused on how the party leadership will respond to the grievances. Whether the dispute is resolved through dialogue, reconciliation or further legal and political action could significantly influence the NDC’s fortunes in Enugu North.

For voters in the senatorial district, the unfolding drama serves as a reminder that the struggle for political representation often begins long before ballots are cast at the polling unit.
