Oyo Schools Reopen Thursday as Teachers Suspend Strike
Public primary and secondary schools in Oyo State are set to resume academic activities on Thursday, July 2, following the suspension of the industrial action by the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT).
The union announced the decision after renewed engagements with the Oyo State Government and fresh assurances on improving security across schools in the state, particularly following the recent abduction of teachers and students in Oriire Local Government Area.
In a statement jointly signed by the Oyo State NUT Chairman, Comrade Hassan Ajibola Fatai, and the State Secretary, Comrade Olukayode Salami, the union disclosed that the suspension received approval from its national leadership after reviewing the prevailing security situation and appeals from stakeholders.
According to the union, the strike was initially declared in protest against the kidnapping of teachers and students, but was suspended in the interest of learners, educators and the wider public.
The statement noted that the state government had pledged to intensify efforts to secure the release of the victims and improve safety measures in schools.
Among the commitments outlined are the establishment of a fully equipped Joint Security Task Force to monitor vulnerable access routes, reinforcement of the Safe School Initiative, improved early warning mechanisms, deployment of surveillance technology, psychosocial support for rescued victims, and payment of gratuities to families of deceased teachers.
The union also acknowledged the support and cooperation of members and partner bodies, including the All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPSS) and the Association of Primary School Head Teachers of Nigeria (AOPSHON), during the period of industrial action.
NUT directed all public primary and secondary school teachers across Oyo State to return to their duty posts from Thursday.
The union, however, stressed that resumption of academic activities does not diminish concerns over school security and urged teachers to remain vigilant and report suspicious movements or threats within their communities and schools.
It reiterated its commitment to protecting the welfare and safety of both educators and students across the state.
