Troops of Operation MESA have recovered an AK-47 rifle, a magazine and three rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition during an intelligence-led raid on a suspected gunrunners’ hideout in Gassol Local Government Area of Taraba State.
The operation, carried out in the early hours of June 30, involved personnel of the 20 Model Battalion in Gassol working alongside operatives from the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA).
According to security sources, the joint team stormed the suspected hideout in Kwatan Nanido Village following credible intelligence linking the area to illegal arms trafficking.
Although no arrests were made during the operation, troops recovered an abandoned AK-47 rifle, one magazine and three rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition from the location.
The recovered weapons and ammunition have been taken into military custody for further investigation and other necessary actions.
Security sources said efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend members of the suspected gunrunning syndicate, adding that security forces will sustain operations aimed at curbing the proliferation of illegal firearms and improving security across Taraba State.
