Troops of the Joint Task Force, South-South, under Operation Delta Safe (OPDS), have repelled an ambush by suspected armed criminals during a routine pipeline security patrol in Ahoada West Local Government Area of Rivers State.

Security sources told Zagazola Makama that the incident occurred at about 2:05 p.m. on June 30, when troops of the 6 Division’s Combat Intelligence Battalion (CIB VIII), deployed in Ogoda Community, came under attack while patrolling pipeline infrastructure.

The sources said the troops were ambushed by armed suspects at Olabie Community but responded with superior firepower, forcing the attackers to retreat into the surrounding bushes.

Following the encounter, reinforcement troops from the battalion headquarters conducted a follow-up exploitation of the area, recovering a motorcycle and a mobile phone believed to have been abandoned by the fleeing suspects.

The recovered items are in military custody, while efforts are ongoing to track down and arrest the suspects.

Military authorities said troops would sustain aggressive patrols and clearance operations across the Niger Delta to protect critical national assets and deny criminal groups freedom of movement.
