Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and the Minister of Works, David Umahi, have dismissed claims that the ongoing Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project is responsible for recent flooding in parts of Lagos.

The officials described the allegations, which gained traction on social media, as false and misleading, insisting that the highway project is not the cause of the seasonal flooding experienced in the state.

They explained that Lagos’ low-lying coastal terrain, heavy rainfall and long-standing drainage challenges are the major factors responsible for flooding in many communities.

According to the officials, the coastal highway is being constructed with modern drainage infrastructure designed to improve water flow and minimise flood risks along the corridor.

They also assured residents that the Federal Government and the Lagos State Government are implementing drainage upgrades, routine desilting and other flood-control measures to protect communities and critical infrastructure.

Sanwo-Olu urged residents to avoid spreading unverified information, while reaffirming the state’s commitment to improving drainage systems and building resilient infrastructure.

Umahi also reiterated that the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project complies with engineering and environmental standards, stressing that it is designed to support sustainable development rather than worsen flooding.
