A Federal High Court in Kano has sentenced a 28-year-old man, Ashiru Idris, to seven years imprisonment for advertising cannabis for sale on social media.

The conviction was secured by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Kano State Command, following the circulation of a video in which the convict allegedly promoted cannabis for sale online.

The command’s Media and Advocacy Officer, Sadiq Muhammad Maigatari, disclosed this in a statement issued on Wednesday.

According to the statement, NDLEA operatives arrested Idris on April 22, 2026, on the directive of the State Commander, CN DY Lawal, after the video surfaced on social media.

Justice S.M. Shuaibu of the Federal High Court, Kano, convicted the defendant and sentenced him to seven years imprisonment without the option of a fine. The sentence took effect from July 14, 2026, the date of the judgment.

The NDLEA described the ruling as a landmark judgment and said it would serve as a strong deterrent to individuals involved in the promotion and trafficking of illicit drugs.

Reacting to the verdict, the Kano State Commander, CN DY Lawal, said the judgment underscored the agency’s determination to tackle drug-related crimes and prosecute offenders who openly promote illegal substances through public platforms.

He reaffirmed the command’s commitment to acting swiftly on credible intelligence and ensuring that offenders face the full weight of the law.

The command also commended the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the  NDLEA, Brig.-Gen. Mohammed Buba Marwa (Rtd.), for his continued support in strengthening the agency’s operations in Kano.

The agency urged families, community leaders, social media platforms and members of the public to support efforts to curb substance abuse by providing useful information that could aid the fight against illicit drug trafficking.
