The political landscape in Nasarawa State is beginning to take a new shape ahead of the 2027 general election with the emergence of a familiar national figure, former Inspector-General of Police (I-G), Mr Mohammed Adamu, as the governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP).
Adamu’s entry into the race adds considerable political and professional weight to the contest, particularly given his long career in the Nigeria Police Force and his experience at the highest level of national security administration.
He emerged as the SDP candidate at a special delegates congress held on Saturday in Lafia, following the withdrawal of the party’s earlier candidate, Mr Musa Angba.
Unlike a conventional primary featuring several contenders, Adamu was the sole candidate at the congress and secured 28,637 votes cast by delegates from the state’s 13 Local Government Areas.
Declaring the result, Mr Joseph Achile, Chairman of the Electoral Committee, said Adamu had satisfied the requirements of the party’s constitution and obtained the highest number of votes.
“Having met the requirements of the party constitution and scored the highest number of votes, I hereby declare Adamu as the SDP governorship candidate for Nasarawa State,” Achile said.
The former police chief now faces the challenge of transforming his national profile into political support across a state where local concerns, development needs and grassroots structures are likely to play decisive roles in the 2027 contest.
From Police Leadership to Political Leadership
Adamu’s political proposition is built largely around governance, security and development.
In his acceptance speech, he thanked the delegates for their confidence and promised to work tirelessly to address what he described as bad governance in the state.
His campaign message places basic infrastructure and social services at the centre of his proposed administration.
Adamu said his assessment of the condition of roads and other infrastructure in the state’s hinterlands during his visits had influenced his decision to seek the governorship.
The emphasis is significant because infrastructure remains one of the most visible measures through which citizens judge government performance, particularly in communities outside major urban centres.
Beyond roads and physical infrastructure, Adamu promised an inclusive government focused on security, education, agriculture and job creation.
“Nasarawa State has great potential. My administration will prioritise the welfare of our people, strengthen security, and ensure that resources of the state are used for the benefit of all,” he said.
That message seeks to present the former I-G not simply as a security professional moving into politics, but as a candidate offering a broader governance agenda.
The Security Advantage
Perhaps the most distinctive element of Adamu’s political profile is his background in policing.
As a former I-G, he occupied one of the country’s most important security positions, giving him extensive experience in law enforcement and national security matters.
The SDP has already placed considerable emphasis on this record.
Speaking at the congress, the party’s National Chairman, Prof. Sadiq Abubakar-Gombe, described Adamu as a leader who headed the Nigeria Police Force with discipline, integrity and commitment to the rule of law.
He congratulated the people of Nasarawa for having Adamu presented to them as the party’s governorship candidate, while urging voters to support him for what he described as total transformation and effective leadership.
Whether that security pedigree will translate into electoral advantage, however, will depend on how effectively the candidate connects his national experience with the everyday concerns of Nasarawa voters.
A New Political Alternative?
For the SDP, Adamu’s emergence is also an opportunity to strengthen its presence in Nasarawa and present itself as an alternative to the major political forces competing for control of the state.
Adamu urged party members to remain united ahead of the election, declaring that the SDP was prepared to provide alternative leadership.
But the road to 2027 is still long.
Winning the party’s ticket is only the first stage of the contest. The more difficult task will be building a formidable grassroots campaign structure, persuading voters, managing political alliances and converting promises on security, infrastructure, education, agriculture and employment into a compelling electoral proposition.
The party’s national leadership is equally looking beyond Nasarawa. Abubakar-Gombe used the occasion to urge Nigerians to support Prince Adewole Adebayo, the SDP’s presidential candidate, as well as other candidates contesting under the party’s platform.
The congress, attended by SDP national officers, party elders, youth and women leaders and other stakeholders, therefore served both as a state-level political exercise and a demonstration of the party’s preparations for the wider 2027 battle.
The Road Ahead
Adamu’s entry has introduced a candidate with a recognisable national profile into Nasarawa’s governorship race. His challenge now is to translate that profile into a grassroots political movement capable of competing effectively across the state’s 13 local government areas.
His campaign will likely be judged on whether he can convince voters that the leadership qualities he demonstrated in policing can be successfully transferred to the more complex demands of democratic governance.
For Nasarawa, the 2027 election may consequently offer voters another choice between established political calculations and a former police chief promising security, development, inclusion and a different style of leadership.
For Adamu and the SDP, the journey has begun. The decisive question is whether the former I-G can turn his experience, reputation and promises into the votes required to take control of the Nasarawa State Government House.
