A pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Deacon Steve Eyo, has reportedly died after collapsing while preaching at a funeral service in Aleto community, Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State.

The incident occurred on Friday, October 2, leaving residents of the community and members of the church in shock and mourning.

According to reports by PM News, Eyo was officiating at the funeral and delivering a sermon titled “The Certainty of Death and Hope Beyond.”

Eyewitnesses said the cleric was speaking about the inevitability of death, explaining that everyone would eventually die, although the timing differed from person to person.

He reportedly compared death to going to the market, noting that while some people return early, others stay longer. Similarly, some people die young, while others live to an old age, adding that death can occur unexpectedly.

However, about 15 minutes into his sermon, Eyo suddenly collapsed, causing his microphone to fall to the ground with a loud sound.

Initially, some mourners reportedly thought the pastor was demonstrating how suddenly death could occur, given the topic of his sermon. They soon realised that the situation was serious.

The cleric was immediately taken to a separate area, where church ministers and choir members gathered to pray for him. Individuals with medical knowledge also reportedly administered first aid.

One of those present later said the pastor had stopped breathing, prompting an urgent decision to rush him to the nearest hospital.

He was transported in the same ambulance that had been hired to convey the remains of the deceased at the funeral.

However, Eyo was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital, and his body was subsequently moved to the mortuary.

His sudden death has left members of the church and residents of Aleto community grieving over the tragic incident.
