Male Nurse Faults Discrimination Against Male Nurses In Labour Wards, Calls For Equal Treatment
A Nigerian male nurse has questioned why male nurses are barred from entering labour wards in some hospitals while male doctors are allowed to attend to women during childbirth.
The nurse expressed his concerns in a video shared online, alleging that male nursing interns are also denied access to labour wards despite the need to gain practical experience as part of their professional training.
In the video, he said it was unfair that male nurses could be prevented from attending to women in labour, only for male doctors to be called when complications arise or when a woman is unable to deliver.
He also criticised senior nurses and hospital administrators who enforce the restrictions, arguing that the practice undermines the training and professional development of male nurses.
The nurse urged his male colleagues to familiarise themselves with the policies of the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) and challenge restrictions they believe conflict with their professional training requirements.
His comments have sparked renewed conversations about gender discrimination in the nursing profession and the challenges male nurses face in accessing certain clinical departments.
