The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has vowed to personally join efforts to rescue kidnapped Nigerians if elected president in 2027.

Obi made the pledge while addressing supporters during a town hall meeting in Enugu State, where he promised to tackle insecurity and ensure that Nigerians can travel freely without fear of abduction.

The former Anambra State governor said he would not remain in the Presidential Villa while criminals abduct citizens, particularly schoolchildren, and take them into forests.

“If there is a general bush, I will be in that bush with them,” Obi declared.

He added that his administration would prioritise national unity and security, stressing that protecting lives and property would be a major responsibility of his government.

“As President of Nigeria, I will unite Nigeria. As President of Nigeria, I will secure Nigeria. We will deal with insecurity. I will not be president and somebody will kidnap our children; we will enter the bush together,” he said.

Obi lamented the country’s worsening challenges, including hunger, unemployment and insecurity, insisting that Nigeria needed a leader with the competence, capacity, compassion and commitment to address its problems.

He also criticised President Bola Tinubu’s leadership, challenging him to embark on a nationwide tour to explain his administration’s achievements over the past three years and account for public funds and borrowed money.

The NDC candidate further argued that the presidency requires energy, commitment and direct engagement with Nigerians.

His remarks come as insecurity, particularly kidnapping and attacks on communities and schools, remains a major concern ahead of the 2027 generail election.
