Pope Francis has condemned clerical sexual abuse, labeling it as the Catholic Church’s “shame,” according to a report by Vatican News on Friday.

In an address to Belgian civil authorities during his ongoing visit to the country, the Pope acknowledged the “fragility and shortcomings” of Church members and the “painful counter-testimonies” that have emerged throughout history.

He emphasized the Church’s responsibility to confront this issue, stating, “The Church, as she carries out her mission, must recognize the fragility and shortcomings of her members.”

The Pope further highlighted the Church’s commitment to addressing the problem by listening to victims, providing support, and implementing a global prevention program. He underscored the importance of accountability, adding, “In the Church, we must ask forgiveness for this. This is our shame and our humiliation.”

While acknowledging that the majority of abuse occurs within families or schools, the 87-year-old pontiff stressed that the Church must not make excuses. Additionally, he touched on the practice of forced adoptions, prevalent in the mid-20th century, noting that such actions were often carried out with good intentions.

Pope Francis’s three-day apostolic visit to Belgium, which began on Thursday, is marked by numerous events and encounters as he continues to address critical issues facing the Church.
