The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has predicted widespread thunderstorms across the country from Monday to Wednesday.
According to NiMet’s weather outlook released on Sunday, localized thunderstorms are expected over parts of Kebbi and Zamfara States in the northern region on Monday morning, with more thunderstorms anticipated in Zamfara, Kaduna, Bauchi, Kebbi, Adamawa, and Taraba States during the afternoon and evening hours.
For the North Central region, Niger and Kwara States will experience morning thunderstorms, while the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nasarawa, Plateau, Kwara, and Kogi States may experience similar weather later in the day. In the southern region, areas like Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Lagos, and Ondo States are expected to face morning thunderstorms, extending to Oyo, Ondo, Osun, Ogun, Imo, Enugu, Ekiti, Edo, Ebonyi, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Lagos, and Akwa Ibom States later.
On Tuesday, morning thunderstorms are forecasted for Taraba, Adamawa, Kano, Katsina, and Jigawa States in the north, with Adamawa, Taraba, Kaduna, Zamfara, Kebbi, Sokoto, Bauchi, Borno, and Gombe experiencing them in the afternoon/evening. In North Central, morning thunderstorms are anticipated in Plateau and Nasarawa States, extending to the FCT, Niger, Plateau, and Nasarawa later. Southern cities like Delta, Edo, and Ondo States will see morning storms, with Ogun, Edo, Ekiti, Ondo, Imo, Enugu, Anambra, Lagos, Rivers, Bayelsa, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom following in the day.
By Wednesday, Kaduna, Zamfara, and Kebbi States are set for morning thunderstorms in the northern region, with a wider spread across Taraba, Adamawa, Borno, Bauchi, Kaduna, Zamfara, Kebbi, Jigawa, and Kano States later. The North Central region, including the FCT, Plateau, Nasarawa, and Kogi, will have morning thunderstorms, while the day will bring storms to Niger, the FCT, Nasarawa, Plateau, and Benue States. In the south, Cross River and Akwa Ibom are expected to experience morning thunderstorms, expanding to Oyo, Osun, Ekiti, Ondo, Lagos, Enugu, Abia, Ebonyi, Rivers, Delta, and Bayelsa later.
NiMet warns residents in flood-prone areas to remain cautious, as heavy downpours and strong winds may lead to urban flooding in major cities. The agency advises the public to stay updated through its weather alerts and for airline operators to obtain airport-specific weather reports from NiMet for flight planning.
