The Nigerian Army’s Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC) has refuted allegations of illegally detaining a civilian at the Minna Military Cantonment, dismissing claims of misconduct by the command’s Military Police.
In a statement issued on Friday, Lt.-Col. Sani Uba, Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations for TRADOC, denied reports from an online publication that accused TRADOC officers of detaining a civilian on the commander’s orders for allegedly attempting to defraud a food vendor.
Uba clarified that the case involved a dismissed Nigerian Air Force personnel, Deekae Sunday Kiaka, who was arrested following a theft complaint by Miss Lynda Moses, a food vendor at the TRADOC Officers’ Mess. Moses reported that N1.1 million was withdrawn from her account by Kiaka, who had been impersonating a serving Air Force sergeant.
Investigations revealed that Kiaka, previously dismissed from the Nigerian Air Force for fraud, had been posing as a sergeant to deceive individuals. He was arrested by the Military Police on October 6 while visiting Moses, and he later confessed to the crime.
The suspect requested the case be handled by the Military Police rather than the Nigerian Police Force and signed an agreement to refund the stolen amount. A journalist, Miss Chiwendu Nnadozie, who Kiaka claimed as his fiancée, stood as his surety during the investigation.
Uba condemned the media outlet for not verifying the claims before publication and reiterated that the case would be handed over to the police for prosecution once the investigation is complete. He called for continued discipline and commitment from TRADOC personnel as the command works towards national security goals.
