Police stopped a man carrying an artillery gun on his trailer near the German-Belgian border on Monday.
The weapon was confiscated and the police are now investigating whether the man is in violation of Germany’s War Weapons Act.
This would be the case if the weapon had not been rendered completely unusable.
The 60-year-old driver said he was a weapons collector and had previously purchased the weapon in Belgium for 9,000 euros (9,800 dollars).
He had already been stopped and checked by police in a layby on the A44 on Thursday.
The weapon was carefully tied down, with its barrel wrapped in foil, police said.
“Securing the load was certainly not the problem,’’ the spokesman said, adding that the case would now be checked by an expert.
