Ekiti State has been plunged into mourning following the death of its Chief Judge, Justice John Adeyeye, who passed away on Monday at the age of 64.
Justice Adeyeye, appointed as Chief Judge on October 11, 2021, leaves a legacy of dedication to justice and judicial independence.
In a heartfelt statement on Tuesday, Governor Biodun Oyebanji described Justice Adeyeye’s death as a “colossal loss” to the state.
The statement, signed by the governor’s Special Adviser on Media, Yinka Oyebode, conveyed deep sympathy to the family of the late judge.
“This is indeed a great loss to our dear state. On behalf of the Government and people of Ekiti State, I commiserate with the family of the late Hon Justice Adeyeye and pray that the good Lord will console and comfort them, and grant the dear departed eternal rest,” Governor Oyebanji said.
The governor lauded Justice Adeyeye as a “firm and forthright jurist” committed to equity and justice, emphasising his pivotal role in strengthening the state’s judiciary and upholding the rights of citizens.
He praised the late judge’s advocacy for judicial independence and his efforts to improve welfare for judicial officers and staff, which he noted had greatly enhanced service delivery in the state.
Governor Oyebanji also extended his condolences to the people of Araromi Ugbesi in Ekiti East Local Government, as well as members of the state’s Bar and Bench.
He encouraged Justice Adeyeye’s family to find solace in the profound impact he made on the judiciary and his significant contributions to the state’s development.
Justice Adeyeye is remembered not only as a pillar of justice in Ekiti but also as an advocate for a stronger, independent judiciary that safeguards the rights of the people.
