A series of fires broke out in the Moscow region following what officials claim was a large-scale drone attack targeting the Russian capital and its surrounding areas. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin announced on Telegram on November 10 that Russian air defenses intercepted two drones attempting to reach Moscow in the Ramenskoye district.
“The air defence forces of the Ministry of Defense in the Ramenskoye urban district repelled an attack by two drones flying to Moscow,” Sobyanin wrote. “According to preliminary data, there is no damage or casualties at the site of the fall of the debris. Emergency services specialists are working at the scene.”
Sobyanin later reported that additional drones were downed by Russian forces, and emergency response teams were actively managing the affected areas.
Images and videos circulated by Astra, an independent Russian news outlet, showed massive flames engulfing residential structures as onlookers watched from a distance. In one clip, flames could be seen rising from Sofyino, a rural village near Moscow, with Astra commenting, “Two residential buildings are burning at the site of the drone attack in Sofyino, Moscow Region, eyewitnesses report.”
In light of the incident, Russia’s federal air transport agency, Rosaviatsia, introduced temporary restrictions at Moscow’s Domodedovo and Zhukovo airports to ensure passenger safety.
Similar drone strikes reportedly targeted Russia’s Bryansk and Kaluga regions. Bryansk Governor Alexander Bogomaz confirmed emergency crews and firefighters were on the scene, while Kaluga Governor Vladislav Shapsha reported a non-residential building in flames following the attack.
The suspected Ukrainian strikes come as part of ongoing hostilities between Russia and Ukraine, with Kyiv rarely acknowledging responsibility for attacks outside its recognized borders. This escalation follows Russia’s continued aerial bombardment of Ukrainian cities and infrastructure, which has intensified since the conflict began.
