Global leaders are set to converge in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, for the 19th Heads of State and Government Summit of the Group of 20 (G20), with a focus on fostering a just world and a sustainable planet. The summit, scheduled for Nov. 18–19, will center on combating hunger, poverty, and inequality, as outlined by Brazilian President Lula da Silva.

Themed “Building a Just World and a Sustainable Planet,” the summit will emphasize three dimensions of sustainable development – economic, social, and environmental – alongside discussions on global governance reform, rising global temperatures, and the digital economy.

High-priority topics include the Israel–Hamas conflict and tensions between the United States and China, which threaten global stability.

As the culmination of Brazil’s G20 presidency, the summit marks a year of deliberations through Ministerial Meetings, Working Groups, and Engagement Groups. Heads of state will adopt agreements reached throughout the year, setting paths to address global challenges.

Brazil’s year-long G20 presidency, which began on Dec. 1, 2023, will conclude on Nov. 30, 2024. The country has embraced the summit as an opportunity to highlight its progress in economic growth, technology, and transportation.

Residents of Rio de Janeiro, including heavily secured areas like Flamengo, Botafogo, and Lapa, are witnessing intensified preparations. Strategic security measures, including armored tanks and police patrols, underscore the city’s readiness for the arrival of over 50 world leaders and delegates.

The G20 consists of 19 member countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, China, Germany, India, Japan, South Africa, and the United States, alongside the European Union.

Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is among the invited leaders, representing the African Union. Brazilian Ambassador to Nigeria, Carlos Areias, extended the invitation, highlighting Brazil’s commitment to eliminating extreme poverty by 2030 through food security initiatives.

The summit promises to be a defining moment for Brazil, showcasing its emergence as a global economic force while advocating for equitable and sustainable global development.
