Nigerian rapper Ice Prince has clarified that he, not Davido, holds the distinction of being the first African artist to receive a BET Award on stage during the ceremony.
In a recent episode of the show Listening, Ice Prince highlighted his 2013 win in the Best International Act, Africa category, stating that he was the first African artist to break the tradition of backstage recognition at the BET Awards.
“I am the first African artiste to go on a BET stage and receive an award solo… When you guys talk about it, you guys give that credit to Davido,” he remarked.
This statement comes amidst a long-standing misconception that Davido, who won the Best International Act award in 2018, was the first African artist to be honored on the main stage. Davido’s victory was notable for his call to action during his acceptance speech, urging more collaborations between African and American artists.
Ice Prince’s comments aim to set the record straight about his pioneering moment in 2013, a milestone often overlooked in favor of Davido’s 2018 win.
