South Korean Investigators Summon Impeached President Yoon Over Martial Law Attempt

Korea’s impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol has been summoned for questioning over allegations of insurrection and abuse of power tied to his failed bid to impose martial law.

The joint investigative team, comprising the police, the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials, and the defense ministry’s investigation unit, announced on Monday that Yoon is expected to appear for questioning on Wednesday.

This follows South Korea’s parliament voting to impeach Yoon on Saturday, nearly two weeks after his controversial declaration of martial law on Dec. 3. The move, which stunned the nation, was reversed within hours after widespread public backlash.

Prime Minister Han Duck Soo has assumed presidential responsibilities in the interim, pending a decision by the Constitutional Court on whether to uphold Yoon’s impeachment or overturn it.

The opposition accused Yoon of violating the constitution, describing the martial law declaration as a power grab. Yoon defended his actions in a televised address on Thursday, claiming the measure was necessary to “protect the nation” and labeling his critics as “anti-state forces.”

The investigation marks a pivotal moment in South Korea’s political crisis, as the nation awaits the court’s ruling on Yoon’s future in office.
