A fire broke out at the Novoshakhtinsk oil refinery in Russia’s southern Rostov region following an alleged Ukrainian airstrike overnight, Russian authorities reported on Thursday.

Acting Governor of Rostov, Yury Slyusar, announced on Telegram that drones and missiles targeted the refinery in the mining city of Novoshakhtinsk, located 16 kilometers (10 miles) from the Ukraine-Russia border.

Slyusar stated that the airstrike involved over 36 drones and three missiles. He confirmed that air defenses have been activated to protect key cities in the region, including Rostov-on-Don.

“Unfortunately, one person was injured in a nearby village due to falling drone fragments,” Slyusar said. He added that the injured individual has received medical treatment and is in stable condition.

The fire at the refinery was brought under control and extinguished by 6:45 a.m. local time (0345GMT).

Meanwhile, the Russian Defense Ministry claimed that 36 Ukrainian drones were destroyed in the Rostov region during the night.

Ukrainian authorities have not issued a statement regarding the alleged attack.
