MultiChoice Reports Billions Lost Annually to Piracy

0 21

MultiChoice, the operator of DStv, has revealed that over 2 million viewers are accessing pirated versions of its series and movies, causing the company to lose billions of rand annually.

This alarming statistic was disclosed in a submission to the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (Icasa). The company highlighted that the widespread piracy exacerbates its struggles, as it faces declining subscriber numbers due to competition from popular subscription-based streaming services like Netflix.

The rise of over-the-top (OTT) platforms has further impacted MultiChoice’s market share, with many consumers opting for more affordable and flexible streaming alternatives. The company’s losses underscore the urgent need for stricter enforcement of copyright laws to protect content creators and distributors.

Industry experts warn that unchecked piracy could harm South Africa’s creative economy, with significant financial repercussions for content producers, broadcasters, and stakeholders. MultiChoice has called for stronger collaborative efforts between regulators, law enforcement, and industry players to combat the issue effectively.

The company also reiterated its commitment to delivering quality content and urged consumers to support legal platforms to sustain the industry.
