Expert Calls for Urgent Action on Rising Male Depression

Environmental activist Awa Emmanuel has urged greater awareness and stronger support systems to address the growing crisis of male depression, which he describes as a “silent killer” that often goes unnoticed.

Speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday, Emmanuel stressed that depression among men requires urgent intervention, as persistent sadness, mood disorders, and loss of interest in daily activities become more widespread.

He highlighted that societal expectations often force men to suppress vulnerability, leading to low self-esteem, self-doubt, and feelings of failure.

“The pressure to succeed, provide for family, and maintain social status takes a heavy toll on mental health,” he said. “Society has created a false narrative that equates personal worth with material success, making it difficult for men to seek help.”

Emmanuel warned that unresolved distress can lead to substance abuse, isolation, irrational behavior, and even suicide. He emphasized the need for early intervention, urging men to recognize the signs of depression and seek professional help.

“Depression thrives in environments where expectations create constant pressure. Criticism from family, financial struggles, and social comparisons only worsen the condition,” he explained.

To combat the issue, he advised men to focus on self-care, maintain a healthy lifestyle, and find joy in small moments. He also encouraged open discussions about mental health to break the stigma surrounding therapy and counseling.

The Nigeria Suicide Research and Prevention Initiative (NSRPI) has reported a rise in suicide rates, with men more likely to die by suicide due to untreated mental health conditions like depression.

Emmanuel called for a collective effort to foster understanding and support, emphasizing that addressing male depression would lead to healthier lives and stronger communities.
