Abandoned Day-Old Baby Rescued by Yobe Police in Damaturu

The Yobe State Police Command has rescued a newborn baby girl abandoned in Kallalawa village, Damaturu, and ensured she received urgent medical attention.

The Command’s spokesperson, SP Dungus Abdulkarim, confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Monday, May 25, 2026.

According to him, police operatives attached to A Division, Damaturu, responded to a distress report and recovered the infant, estimated to be about one day old, after she was found abandoned in the community.

The baby was immediately taken to the Special Baby Care Unit at the General Hospital, Damaturu, where medical personnel confirmed she was in stable condition.

“The infant was promptly taken to the Special Baby Care Unit, General Hospital Damaturu, where medical examination confirmed her to be in stable condition,” the statement said.

Abdulkarim added that the child has since been handed over to the Social Welfare Department for proper care and protection, while investigations have commenced to identify the mother and circumstances surrounding the abandonment.
