The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has intensified efforts to locate and recover its ATR-42 aircraft, NAF 931, following the accident in Igbokoda, Ondo State, as multiple security and emergency agencies join the painstaking operation.
The aircraft accident, which occurred on Monday, has triggered a coordinated search and recovery mission involving military formations, emergency responders, security agencies, government authorities and local communities.
The NAF Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday in Abuja, saying the Air Force remained at the forefront of efforts to manage the aftermath of the incident.
According to him, the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, commended NAF personnel for their dedication and professionalism, while also recognising the support provided by sister security agencies and other stakeholders involved in the operation.
The search and recovery effort has brought together the Nigerian Army, Nigerian Navy, Nigeria Police Force, National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Ondo State Government, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Amotekun Corps, Hi-Tech Construction Company, local authorities, community leaders and volunteers.
The broad mobilisation reflects the scale and complexity of recovery operations in the aftermath of an aircraft accident, particularly in difficult terrain where specialised personnel, equipment and local knowledge are required.
For the NAF, however, the operation is not only about recovering the aircraft but also demonstrating the importance of coordinated national response during moments of adversity.
Ejodame said the collaboration among the various agencies and stakeholders underscored the strength of inter-agency cooperation and collective national service.
As personnel continue to work at the scene, the NAF has pledged to pursue the recovery operation with diligence and caution, stressing that the safety of those involved remains a priority.
The Air Force also assured Nigerians that relevant updates would continue to be provided as the operation progresses.
The incident has once again placed the spotlight on the demanding responsibilities of military aviation and the risks associated with operating aircraft in the service of national security.
Beyond the immediate search, the coordinated response in Igbokoda offers a reminder that in times of national emergency, the effectiveness of rescue and recovery efforts often depends on the ability of institutions, communities and citizens to work together.
For the men and women involved in the operation, the mission continues—quietly and painstakingly—as they work to bring the recovery effort to a safe and orderly conclusion.
