President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has applauded President Bola Tinubu for signing into law three bills establishing new federal tertiary institutions in the South-East region of the country.
The newly approved institutions include the College of Education, Bende, Abia State; the Federal University of Medical and Health Sciences, Item, Bende, Abia State; and the Federal University, Okigwe, Imo State.
Akpabio made the commendation in a statement released on Wednesday in Abuja through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Eseme Eyiboh.
He also lauded stakeholders in both the Senate and the House of Representatives for their commitment and support for the “Renewed Hope Agenda” of the Tinubu administration.
The Senate President specifically praised the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Benjamin Kalu, for sponsoring two of the bills. He further commended Deputy Whip, Senator Onyekachi Nwebonyi, Deputy Minority Whip, Senator Osita Ngwu, and Senator Patrick Ndubueze for co-sponsoring the legislative efforts.
According to Akpabio, the new institutions are poised to enhance access to quality education, foster research opportunities, and address both the educational and healthcare needs of the South-East geopolitical zone.
He described the establishment of the institutions as a major step toward the development of the region.
“I applaud President Tinubu for his inclusive leadership and commitment to the development of the South-East zone and efforts to heal the deep-seated wounds of the past,” Akpabio stated.
“The establishment of these institutions will go a long way to remove the nagging feelings of distrust and socio-economic marginalisation among the people of the zone,” he added.
The Senate President urged the people of the South-East to embrace the Renewed Hope Agenda and align themselves strategically with President Tinubu’s administration.
Akpabio expressed optimism that continued support for the current administration by the South-East would lead to greater democratic dividends for the region.
