In a significant political development that could reshape alignments within Nigeria’s opposition landscape, the Minority Whip of the House of Representatives, Ali Isa, has resigned his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), pointing to deep-seated internal crises and what he described as the “hijacking” of the party by undemocratic forces.

In a resignation letter dated April 14 and addressed to the Chairman of Kindiyo Ward in Cham, Balanga Local Government Area of Gombe State, Isa announced that his departure from the party takes immediate effect.

The letter, which was made available to journalists in Gombe and signed by the federal lawmaker himself, followed what he described as “careful consideration and wide consultations” with his family, political associates, and key stakeholders.

Isa, who represents the Balanga/Billiri Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives under the platform of the PDP at the time of his election, said his decision was driven by growing concerns over the direction of the party. He alleged that the party’s structure had been taken over in ways that contradict its founding ideals, resulting in factional leadership and internal disunity.

According to him, remaining within the party was no longer in the best interest of his constituents, insisting that their political future and aspirations would be better served on a different political platform that guarantees stability, inclusion, and meaningful representation.

Despite his resignation, the lawmaker expressed appreciation to the PDP leadership and members for the opportunity to serve under its platform, noting that he remains grateful for the role the party played in his emergence as a member of the National Assembly.

Peoples Democratic Party (Nigeria) has yet to issue an official response to the resignation at the time of filing this report.
