APC Condemns Makinde Over Alleged Inciting Remarks, Calls for Security Action

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has strongly criticized Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, accusing him of making inflammatory remarks capable of inciting violence and threatening national stability.

In a press statement issued on Sunday in Abuja by its National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, the ruling party alleged that Makinde invoked the historical violence associated with “Operation Wetie” while addressing a gathering of opposition parties in Ibadan on Saturday, April 25, 2026.

The APC described the governor’s comments as “reckless” and “a clear and present danger to peace and national security,” noting that such rhetoric was unbecoming of a sitting governor who also serves as the chief security officer of his state.

According to the statement, Makinde’s remarks went beyond routine political opposition and risked “fueling anarchy, murderous rage and widespread lawlessness.” The party therefore urged security and intelligence agencies to take the matter seriously to prevent any breakdown of law and order.

The APC further argued that constitutional immunity does not shield public officials from accountability in matters affecting national security, stressing that no individual should threaten the country’s democratic order under the guise of political commentary.

The statement also dismissed claims by opposition figures that Nigeria is drifting toward a one-party state, attributing challenges within opposition parties to internal crises, poor leadership, and factional disputes. It specifically criticized developments within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the Labour Party (LP), and the African Democratic Congress (ADC), describing them as self-inflicted problems.

Referencing key opposition figures such as Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, the APC alleged that internal struggles and leadership disputes had weakened the opposition’s ability to present a credible alternative to voters.

The ruling party maintained that Nigeria’s democratic environment remains vibrant, citing the presence of multiple registered political parties participating in the electoral process. It expressed confidence that voters would reject what it described as “fear-mongering” narratives ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Reaffirming its stance, the APC said it remains committed to strengthening democratic institutions under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, while continuing to implement its “Renewed Hope Agenda” aimed at promoting national unity and development.

The statement underscores rising political tensions as parties begin positioning ahead of the next electoral cycle.
