A Grade A Customary Court sitting in Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State, has adjourned a divorce case filed by a woman, Eluronke, against her husband, Ayomipo, over allegations of domestic violence and excessive alcohol consumption.

Testifying before the court, Eluronke accused her husband of subjecting her to repeated physical abuse whenever he became intoxicated. She alleged that his drinking habit had turned their marriage into a nightmare.

According to her, Ayomipo consumes alcohol excessively on a daily basis and often returns home drunk. She claimed that whenever he is intoxicated, he becomes aggressive and violent, sometimes assaulting her for hours.

“My husband beats me mercilessly from 9:00 p.m. until 5:00 a.m. whenever he is drunk,” she told the court.

Eluronke further stated that her husband frequently defended his drinking habit, insisting that alcohol helps him sleep better and prevents him from becoming depressed or overwhelmed by worries.

However, she maintained that his excessive alcohol intake has only led to constant conflicts and disturbances in their home. She said their frequent quarrels have become a source of embarrassment, with neighbours and co-tenants often complaining about the late-night altercations allegedly triggered by Ayomipo’s behaviour.

The plaintiff urged the court to dissolve the marriage, stating that she could no longer endure the alleged abuse and emotional distress.

The case was subsequently adjourned for further hearing.
