Coaches Urge Falconets to Sharpen Goal Scoring Against Venezuela
Football coaches in Abuja have called on the Falconets to improve their finishing in front of goal as they face Venezuela in their final group match at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Colombia.
The Falconets, Nigeria’s U-20 women’s team, suffered a 3-1 defeat against Germany on Thursday, missing several scoring opportunities. The team must win against Venezuela on Saturday to stand a chance of progressing to the tournament’s knockout stages.
Speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), coaches highlighted poor finishing and defensive issues as the main factors behind the Falconets’ loss to Germany. Phillip Attah, a football coach, acknowledged that head coach Christopher Danjuma has worked hard to harness the team’s potential, but the final execution is still lacking.
“In spite of adopting a counter-attacking strategy, the Falconets couldn’t secure a win against Germany. Their performance showed promise, but they need to capitalize on chances against Venezuela to win,” Attah said.
Joyce Agubata, another coach, praised the team’s efforts but noted that Germany’s goalkeeper, Rebecca Adamczyk, was a tough obstacle. “The Falconets have their fate in their own hands. A win over Venezuela will give them six points and likely secure their place in the next round due to the new 24-team format,” she explained.
Hassana Adamu, a grassroots coach, stressed the need for the Falconets to regroup and adjust their tactics, particularly in goal-scoring and defense. “The team had several opportunities against Germany but converted only one. They must improve their finishing to defeat Venezuela and advance,” she said.
The Falconets will face Venezuela on Saturday at 11 p.m. at the Estadio Pascual Guerrero in Cali, Colombia.
