Concerns Mount Over Afghan Evacuees’ Conditions as Resettlement Delays Persist

Growing concern surrounds the welfare of Afghan evacuees awaiting resettlement, as delays continue to expose many to health risks, family separation and legal uncertainty.

Advocates say thousands of displaced Afghans remain in limbo, facing difficult living conditions and limited access to essential services while awaiting permanent relocation.

The situation comes against the backdrop of an ongoing humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan, where years of conflict and economic isolation have left millions grappling with poverty, unemployment and inadequate access to healthcare and basic necessities.

Aid organisations, including the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), have repeatedly called for faster and more coordinated international action, warning that prolonged delays in resettlement increase vulnerability and instability among displaced populations.

In the United States, lawmakers have also raised objections to reported relocation plans. Senators Tammy Duckworth, Tim Kaine and Ed Markey have criticised the proposals, urging an immediate halt and stronger protections for Afghan allies who supported U.S. efforts.

They emphasised the need for a more humane and secure resettlement process, calling on authorities to uphold commitments made to vulnerable Afghans.

Humanitarian groups warn that without swift intervention, the situation could worsen, leaving many evacuees at risk of prolonged displacement and hardship.
