Dawn Raid in Katsina: Troops Smash Terrorist Enclave, Recover Weapons and Rustled Livestock
In the early hours of Monday, when most residents of Matazu Local Government Area in Katsina State were still asleep, troops of Operation FANSAN YAMMA launched a decisive assault on a suspected terrorist stronghold, dealing another blow to criminal networks operating in Nigeria’s North-West.
Acting on credible intelligence, soldiers of the 17 Brigade stormed a hideout in Ginchawa community under the military’s ongoing Operation Clean Sweep III. The operation, according to military sources, targeted armed criminals believed to be using the enclave as a base for their activities.
The raid quickly escalated into a confrontation as the suspected terrorists attempted to resist the advancing troops. However, they were overwhelmed by superior firepower and forced to abandon their position, fleeing into the surrounding bushes.
Determined to prevent their escape, the troops pursued the fleeing suspects along their withdrawal routes. Although contact was eventually lost, evidence left behind suggested that several of the fleeing terrorists sustained gunshot wounds during the encounter.
Military authorities disclosed that two suspected terrorists were neutralised during the operation, while others escaped with injuries.
A subsequent search of the enclave yielded a significant cache of weapons and other items. Recovered from the hideout were two PKT machine guns, a locally fabricated firearm, an AK-47 magazine, and 75 rounds of 7.62mm NATO linked ammunition. Troops also seized three motorcycles, two mobile phones, and a pair of camouflage uniforms believed to have been used by members of the criminal group.
Perhaps most significant for local communities was the recovery of several cows and goats suspected to have been rustled by the terrorists. Livestock theft has remained one of the major challenges facing rural communities across the North-West, often depriving families of their livelihoods and deepening insecurity in affected areas.
The latest operation underscores the military’s sustained campaign to dismantle terrorist and bandit networks across the region. Security forces have intensified intelligence-driven operations aimed at disrupting criminal hideouts, recovering stolen property, and restoring confidence among communities affected by years of violence.
Military officials say the operation is part of broader efforts to deny terrorist groups freedom of movement and operational space in the North-West, while maintaining pressure on criminal elements threatening peace and stability in the region.
For residents of communities long plagued by attacks, cattle rustling, and abductions, the successful raid offers another sign that security forces remain committed to reclaiming vulnerable areas from armed groups and restoring normalcy to daily life.
