Driver docked over alleged possession of 6kg of Cannabis Sativa

A commercial driver, Nureni Folorunso, on Monday, was brought before a Federal High Court in Ibadan over alleged possession of 6kg of Cannabis Sativa.

Folorunso, however, pleaded not guilty to the two-count charge of unlawful dealing and possession of the narcotic substance.

Subsequently, Justice Nkeonye Maha admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N500,000 with two reliable sureties in like sum.

Maha adjourned the suit until March 27 for trial.

Earlier, Counsel to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Mr Daniel Otunla, had told the court that the defendant committed the offences on Jan. 27, on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

Otunla explained that NDLEA operatives on a stop and search operation on the expressway  intercepted Folorunso in his vehicle while in possession of a sack containing 6kg of the illicit substance.

According to him, the offences contravene the provisions of Sections 11 (C ) and 19 of the NDLEA Act N30 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Act prescribes a maximum sentence of life imprisonment for anyone convicted of each of the offences.
