DRTS Impounds Over 9,000 Vehicles in 8 Months in Abuja

The Directorate of Road Traffic Services (DRTS) in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has impounded a total of 9,389 vehicles for various traffic offenses between January and August 2024.

Mr. Kalu Emetu, Head of Public Relations and Enlightenment at DRTS, disclosed this information in an interview with newsmen on Tuesday in Abuja. Emetu explained that offending drivers were required to attend the directorate’s model drivers’ institute in Lugbe for correction and retraining.

“This training offers an opportunity for offenders, especially those without prior driving school experience, to learn safe driving practices within the territory,” Emetu noted.

He further explained that, besides paying fines that generate government revenue, drivers are not allowed to retrieve their vehicles until all stipulated conditions are met. In some cases, drivers undergo psychometric testing, and those deemed unfit are subjected to psychoanalysis.

“The directorate is committed to ensuring safety, and if a driver poses a danger to others, we have the authority to withdraw their license outright,” Emetu emphasized.

Addressing the issue of rickety vehicles, Emetu revealed that DRTS conducted inspections on 19,929 vehicles, with only 9,234 passing the roadworthiness test. This represents about 47 percent, while 10,792 were sent back for further maintenance.

“This exercise, conducted between January and August, marks a significant improvement due to the strategic increase in enforcement activities. It has encouraged more vehicle owners to utilize our inspection centers,” he added.

He concluded that the DRTS remains committed to enhancing road safety and reducing accidents by ensuring vehicles on FCT roads are roadworthy.
