Dubai Police Arrest Beggar Using Talismans to Gain Sympathy

Dubai Police have arrested a woman who used talismans to solicit sympathy and money from passersby, as part of an ongoing crackdown on begging.

Authorities observed that people handed her money almost immediately after approaching her. Upon searching her belongings, officers discovered scraps of paper inscribed with mysterious symbols, along with folded papers containing names sewn together with needle and thread.

The arrest is part of Dubai Police’s broader initiative to combat deceptive begging tactics and maintain public security. Several other cases have been recorded, including an individual found with documents tracking cash deliveries worth Dhs8,700 and an Asian man caught with Dhs42,000 collected from begging.

In another case, a young Arab man was detained after disguising himself as a woman in an Abaya and Niqab near a mosque. He later admitted to using the disguise, believing female beggars receive more financial aid.

Brigadier Ali Salem Al Shamsi, Director of the Suspects and Criminal Phenomena Department, stated that police operations are ongoing in collaboration with relevant authorities. He warned that beggars employ various tactics to manipulate public sympathy, particularly during Ramadan.

Captain Khamis Abdullah Al Naqbi, Head of the Anti-Begging Section, urged residents to report begging and street vending violations via the 901 hotline or the ‘Police Eye’ service on the Dubai Police app.

The anti-begging campaign, active 24/7 during Ramadan, aims to identify and penalize offenders, reinforcing Dubai’s commitment to public order and security.
