FG Boosts Inmates’ Feeding Allowance by 50% to Address Rising Costs

The Federal Government has raised the feeding allowance for inmates in the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS) by 50%, effective from August 24, 2024. The decision, aimed at offsetting the increasing cost of food in the country, was disclosed by NCoS spokesperson, Mr. Umar Abubakar, at a news conference hosted by the Nigeria Customs Service in Abuja.

“The government has reviewed the feeding allowance of inmates by 50%, and this marks the first phase of further planned reviews,” Abubakar said, adding that future phases will focus on improving overall allowances for inmates.

He also addressed concerns raised by a viral video portraying poor inmate nutrition, calling it a misrepresentation of NCoS efforts in reformation and rehabilitation. An investigation into the video has been ordered by the Minister of Interior.

Abubakar highlighted the progress made in reforming inmates, with over 1,000 currently enrolled in degree programs, 1,282 pursuing diplomas and master’s degrees, and six inmates working toward PhDs, three of whom are writing their theses.

The spokesperson emphasized that these educational and reformation efforts are part of broader measures to reintegrate inmates into society smoothly.

Additionally, he noted that collaboration with the Chief Judges of Ondo and Gombe states has facilitated the release of 72 and 185 inmates, respectively, as part of ongoing efforts to reform the correctional system.
