FRSC Warns: Fake Number Plates Pose Major Security Threat

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Lagos State Command, has raised alarm over the security risks posed by fake vehicle number plates, vowing to clamp down on the menace.

Speaking at the launch of a special operation against fake number plates in Lagos on Thursday, the Lagos State Sector Commander, Corps Commander Kehinde Hamzat, emphasized the dangers of untraceable vehicles in tackling crime.

“Over time, we have discovered that some security challenges in the country cannot be resolved because the source of certain vehicles cannot be identified,” Hamzat said.

He explained that in many cases, authorities attempting to track a vehicle involved in criminal activities find no records in the official database, making it difficult to trace offenders.

Hamzat stated that some road violations and reckless driving incidents are also linked to vehicles with fake number plates.

“Those using fake number plates must stop or face serious consequences. This operation is a direct mandate from the Corps Marshal, and we are committed to enforcing it without compromise,” he warned.

He added that FRSC officials have the expertise to detect counterfeit number plates through specific security features. Some plates illegally bear inscriptions like Presidency or National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), which, he noted, are fraudulent and could be used for criminal activities.

“These fake plates pose a risk, especially when criminals use them to commit offenses while impersonating legitimate institutions. We must work together to eliminate this threat,” he said.

Hamzat stressed that the crackdown would be a continuous exercise, warning those using fake number plates to desist as enforcement would be intensified.

Vehicles found with counterfeit plates will be impounded, and offenders will face prosecution.

Before the operation commenced, FRSC officers were briefed on safety measures and tactical procedures for intercepting suspicious vehicles.

“Safety comes first. Be alert, follow protocol, and ensure smooth coordination during arrests,” Hamzat instructed the officers.

The FRSC urged the public to report suspicious number plates and support efforts to enhance national security.
