Germany Pledges €100M Winter Aid to Ukraine, Supports Moldova

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has announced an additional €100 million in winter aid for Ukraine, aimed at mitigating the impact of ongoing Russian attacks on the country’s infrastructure. The aid package is seen as crucial not only for Ukraine but also for neighboring Moldova and European democracy.

Speaking at a conference in Chișinău on Tuesday, Baerbock emphasized that the fall of Ukraine could have severe implications for Moldova, which borders the war-torn country. “The biggest concern of the local people here is that if Ukraine falls, Moldova will be the next country to fall,” Baerbock stated.

Russian strikes have left parts of Ukraine struggling with energy shortages, affecting water and heating supplies as the winter season approaches. Baerbock accused Moscow of deliberately worsening living conditions in Ukraine, while noting that Russian President Vladimir Putin’s destabilization efforts have only strengthened Moldova’s and Ukraine’s resolve, with both countries now being candidates for EU membership.

During her visit, Baerbock held talks with Moldova’s President, Maia Sandu, discussing the need to stabilize Moldova further. She also visited a center dedicated to combating disinformation and propaganda.
