‏Herders have agreed to pay ₦1 million in compensation to farmers following the destruction of farmlands in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State after intervention by security personnel and community leaders.

According to security sources, troops of Operation Enduring Peace (OPEP), Sector 6, responded to reports of farmland destruction in Sopp Village at about 12:00 p.m. on June 16.

The affected farmlands reportedly belonged to Mr. Nyip Yakubu Badung and 10 other farmers in the community.

On arrival, security operatives discovered that cattle had strayed into the farms, causing significant damage to crops cultivated by the residents.

To prevent the situation from escalating, troops facilitated a peace meeting involving representatives of the affected farmers and leaders of the herding community.

Following discussions, both parties reached an agreement for ₦1 million compensation to be paid to the affected farmers through the Chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) in Riyom Local Government Area.

Security sources said the resolution was aimed at preventing reprisals and preserving peace in the area.

Authorities added that normalcy has been restored, while continued dialogue is being encouraged to strengthen peaceful coexistence between farmers and herders in the community.
