House of Representatives Dissolves Oil and Gas Probe Panel

The House of Representatives has dissolved the ad-hoc Joint Committee on Downstream and Midstream probing activities of the Nigeria National Petroleum Company Ltd. (NNPCL) and the Nigeria Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA).

House spokesperson Rep. Akin Rotimi announced on Monday in Abuja that a newly constituted ad-hoc committee would take over the investigation with the same mandate.

The dissolved committee was investigating issues such as the importation of adulterated petroleum products, the non-availability of crude oil for domestic refineries, and other critical energy security concerns.

Rotimi stated that the dissolution aims to ensure the efficacy and independence of the investigation. The new committee will be composed of members selected for their expertise, competence, and integrity.

“The House remains committed to addressing these vital issues and ensuring thorough oversight,” Rotimi affirmed.

The reports gathered that on July 3, 118 members, under the banner of “1 AGENDA,” placed an advertorial in three national dailies allegedly aimed at protecting NNPCL in the previous probe panel. Some lawmakers whose names appeared in the advertorial later distanced themselves from it.
