Chief Wantaregh Paul Unongo, the late Nigerian statesman and former Minister of Information, has been inducted into the Idoma Hall of Fame in recognition of his contributions to national politics and his support for the aspirations of the Idoma people.

Unongo’s award was received on his behalf by Professor Steve Ugba at the maiden induction ceremony of the Idoma Hall of Fame, held on Thursday, October 15, 2026, at the Peach Vine Event Centre, Wuye, Abuja.

The ceremony, organised as part of activities marking the Idoma Centenary Plus celebration, brought together prominent political leaders, public office holders, professionals and other distinguished personalities to celebrate individuals whose achievements have contributed to society.

Although Unongo was not of Idoma extraction, he was recognised for his friendship with the Idoma people and his support for their political aspirations, including agitation for an Idoma person to emerge as governor of Benue State.

His advocacy reflected his involvement in wider discussions about political representation, equity and inclusion in Benue State, particularly the demand for greater recognition of the Idoma people in the state’s political leadership.

The Idoma Hall of Fame was established to preserve the history and heritage of the Idoma people while celebrating individuals whose achievements and contributions have made a lasting impact on their community and Nigeria.
