Former President Goodluck Jonathan has strongly hinted at a possible return to the presidential race in 2027 amid increasing pressure from supporters and political stakeholders across the country urging him to contest.

Speaking with journalists in Abuja on Thursday, Jonathan said he would contest “when the need arises” after extensive consultations, adding that he would engage well-meaning Nigerians before taking a final decision on the presidency.

According to the former Nigerian leader, consultations are still ongoing as calls for his return to power continue to gain momentum in different parts of the country.

In recent months, several groups and political associates have intensified appeals for Jonathan to join the 2027 race, citing his experience, calm disposition and what they described as his peaceful leadership style.

The renewed calls are said to be coming from youth groups, political allies and some northern stakeholders who believe the country needs experienced leadership to address worsening economic and security challenges.

Although Jonathan stopped short of making a formal declaration, his latest remarks have further fuelled speculations that he may soon officially announce his intention to run for president.

Meanwhile, a case challenging Jonathan’s eligibility to contest the 2027 presidential election is expected to come up tomorrow at the Federal High Court.

Sources familiar with the matter said the outcome of the judgment could influence whether the former president formally declares for the race.

Jonathan served as Nigeria’s president from 2010 to 2015 and has largely remained silent over the years despite repeated calls for him to seek another term in office.
