The Kano State Government has introduced a set of stringent environmental protection laws aimed at curbing the state’s growing pollution crisis.
Speaking shortly after presenting the new laws to the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Umar Farouk-Ibrahim, the Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Dr. Dahir Hashim, said the legislation is designed to tackle various forms of environmental abuse.
“These laws are aimed at tackling environmental pollution, particularly issues such as the discharge of harmful chemicals, indiscriminate waste disposal, open defecation on roads, and the release of contaminated water by factories, among others,” Hashim stated.
The SSG, Umar Farouk-Ibrahim, expressed full support for the initiative, assuring the commissioner of the government’s commitment to enforcing the new measures.
Dr. Hashim also revealed that the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change would roll out an eight-week public sensitisation campaign to create awareness about the laws.
“The campaign will target individuals and sectors affected by the new laws to raise awareness on the importance of cleanliness and environmental care,” he said.
He further announced that the laws would be made available to the public in both Hausa and English languages within the week to ensure they are widely understood.
Hashim expressed optimism that Kano residents would embrace the government’s efforts to build a cleaner and healthier environment.
